Walk Summary
This is the 17th most prominent peak in Spain/Portugal including the islands and at P1296 is now the most prominent point I have reached so far. Only Ben Nevis is more prominent in GB, which remains unclimbed.
Joined by John and Sue, neighbours from Camping Veruela Moncayo, we set off from last car park before Santuario del Moncayo Albergue & Restaurant in 22°C with mountain forecast of 12 °C and clearing skies on summit.
After following a well-defined path enjoying straight forward navigation even in cloud was welcomed at the col (where 60m ascent remains and 1km walk to summit) with strong winds, cloud and very high dew point. Presenting entirely different conditions to those expected. Fortunately had donned coat and gloves lower down. Difficult conditions to take decent photos on summit with icy rain, strengthening gusts and wind chill at almost 0 °C.
Suffice to say did not hang around long before returning down ascent route.
This summit was permanently shrouded in cloud and own micro-climate despite decent conditions at campsite during the 4 nights I spent in the area.
With an isolation of 145.6km I am sure on a clear day the views would be spectacular all round.
